Offence Summary

Philip Duffield raped two young women in a Holiday Inn hotel after they became intoxicated during a night out in Shrewsbury and later assaulted a third woman in Birmingham after spiking her drink.

Full Description

Philip Duffield, a 25-year-old man from Solihull, was sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court for committing multiple sexual offences against three women in 2024. The incidents began on 26 April 2024, during a night out in Shrewsbury, where Duffield targeted two victims, aged 18 and 20, at the Shrewsbury Hotel Wetherspoons pub alongside a friend.

The group later moved to Albert's Shed and Fever nightclub before returning to a Holiday Inn hotel, where Duffield had pre-booked a room. CCTV footage captured him carrying one of the unconscious women inside. During the trial, it emerged that Duffield's friend had struck or pushed the 20-year-old victim, causing her to injure her face. While she was in the bathroom, Duffield raped the 18-year-old on the bed. Upon her return, he raped the 20-year-old in front of the first victim. Judge Heidi Kubik KC, passing sentence, stated: "You raped them when they were semi-conscious through extreme intoxication and unable to resist your sexual advances. They were particularly vulnerable because of their state of intoxication."

The following morning, one of the women reported the attack to police, leading to Duffield's arrest. He provided 'no comment' responses during questioning and was bailed. However, on 4 December 2024, while on bail, Duffield attacked a third woman after a night out at Glamorous nightclub in Birmingham. He took her back to his home on Grosvenor Road, Solihull, where she requested white wine, but he gave her vodka mixed with Fanta and an unknown substance, spiking her drink. The woman drifted in and out of consciousness and awoke to find herself bleeding and being sexually assaulted by penetration.

At the hospital, she experienced flickering eyes and hallucinations. Judge Kubik remarked: "I'm satisfied on the face of the evidence you did spike her drink with something for the purpose of facilitating the offence." Following a trial, Duffield was found guilty of two counts of rape and one count of assault by penetration. On 7 September 2026, he was declared a dangerous offender and jailed for 12 years with an extended three-year licence period. The judge noted his unrepentant attitude and lack of insight, countering defence claims of his 'sexual immaturity' by highlighting his status as a university graduate with a well-paid job.

The victims suffered severe impacts; the 18-year-old developed anxiety, depression, and nightmares, forcing her to quit college and lose her friends. The 20-year-old reported similar effects, while the third victim declined to provide a statement. Duffield, previously of good character with no prior convictions, must serve two-thirds of his sentence (eight years) before eligibility for release. The case was reported by Birmingham Live, with court proceedings at Birmingham Crown Court.
