Full Description

A 56-year-old man from Stevenage, Hertfordshire, has been sentenced to a significant term of imprisonment for committing serious sexual offences against children. Colin Phillips appeared at St Albans Crown Court on Thursday, 9 February 2023, where he received a total sentence of 14 years, comprising 10 years in custody and an additional four years on licence. Following his guilty plea, Phillips was also added to the sex offenders’ register and subjected to a sexual harm prevention order to protect the public from further harm.

The charges against Phillips included one count of rape of a child under 13, three counts of sexual assault of a child under 13, four counts of causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in sexual activity, and three counts of making indecent images of a child. These despicable acts took place over a six-month period from February 2022 to July 2022. Hertfordshire Constabulary arrested Phillips on 3 November 2022, leading to his formal charging and subsequent court proceedings.

Detective Sergeant Dan Osborne, from the Joint Child Protection Investigation Team, commended the bravery of the victims and their families in supporting the investigation. In a statement, he said: “A dangerous offender has been removed from the community and put behind bars for despicable behaviour towards children. I’d like to highlight the bravery of the victims and families who have supported the investigation to help bring Phillips to justice.” The case was handled by Hertfordshire Constabulary, underscoring their commitment to tackling child sexual exploitation and abuse.

This sentencing serves as a stark reminder of the severe consequences for those who perpetrate such crimes against vulnerable children. Phillips’ removal from society for a decade aims to safeguard the community, particularly young individuals, from potential future offences.
