Offence Summary

Eugen Simion raped a lone woman walking home in Camborne, Cornwall, and was sentenced to 18 years in prison at Truro Crown Court.

Full Description

On 2 February 2025, at approximately 01:40 BST, a woman was walking home alone in Camborne, Cornwall, after a night out in the town centre. Having been unable to secure a taxi, she proceeded on foot when she was approached by an unknown male, later identified as 21-year-old Romanian national Eugen Simion.

The victim recalled the man attempting to kiss her, which she resisted by pushing him away. The next memory she had was of being raped by him in a dark field nearby. Distraught and in a state of shock, she arrived at Camborne Police Station about 30 minutes later, covered in mud and without shoes, seeking help.

Devon and Cornwall Police launched an investigation, arresting Simion on 6 February 2025. The case was handled by the force's major crime investigation team, led by Senior Investigating Officer Detective Inspector Rob Smith. Simion was charged with rape and stood trial at Truro Crown Court, where a jury found him guilty.

During the sentencing hearing, the court heard details of the profound impact the violent sexual assault had on the victim. Simion, residing in Pendarves, Camborne, was jailed for 18 years. Detective Inspector Rob Smith commented: 'This incident has had a profound impact on the victim, who should have been able to walk home perfectly safely.' He further praised the victim's bravery, stating: 'Eugen Simion targeted her and subjected her to a violent sexual assault. She has demonstrated immense bravery and ensured we were able to bring Simion to justice.'

The attack underscores the dangers faced by individuals walking alone at night, with police emphasising the victim's right to safety in her community. This case was reported by BBC News South West on 18 August 2025, drawing attention to ongoing concerns about sexual violence in Cornwall.
