Full Description

A man from Launceston in Cornwall has been sentenced to 27 years in prison for a series of horrific sexual offences against children, in what has been described as a 'highly disturbing' case.

Marc Bear, aged 38, appeared at Truro Crown Court on Thursday, 5 December 2024, where he was jailed following a trial that concluded in November 2024. The jury found him guilty of 16 offences, comprising 10 counts of rape, two counts of sexual assault, two counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, and two counts of causing a person to engage in sexual activity. He was acquitted of two counts of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, one count of rape, and one count of sexual assault.

In addition to the 27-year custodial sentence, Bear received a one-year extended licence period, a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, and will be required to register on the Sex Offenders Register for life. The judge remarked during sentencing that Bear posed a lifelong risk to children, stating, 'That told me everything I need to know about your character,' after Bear absconded on bail following his conviction. He was located the next day in Somerset.

Detective Constable Tim Barbery from the Public Protection Unit at Devon and Cornwall Police, the investigating officer, commented on the case: 'This was a highly disturbing case where the offender has exploited the vulnerability of young people for his own sexual gratification, and I welcome the sentence handed down by the judge. This has been a protracted investigation due to the nature of the offences and the strength and bravery shown by the victims in support of the police case has been crucial. I hope the outcome provides them with a small element of closure so that they can begin to move forward.'

The offences involved the sexual abuse and rape of children, highlighting the exploitation of vulnerable young individuals. The case was handled by Devon and Cornwall Police, underscoring the severity and impact of Bear's actions on the victims and the community.
