Full Description

Liam Shades, a 41-year-old man of no fixed abode from Pontywaun near Risca in Caerphilly, was sentenced at Newport Crown Court for possessing a large collection of indecent images of children. The case came to light following a raid by Gwent Police in May, during which officers discovered more than 1,600 such images on his devices.

Prosecutor Ieuan Bennett informed the court that among the images were 379 category A files, the most severe classification, showing children being sexually abused and raped by adults. Shades also had 266 category B images and 988 category C images, with the offences spanning from May 2015 to the present year. He pleaded guilty to making these indecent images of children.

In mitigation, barrister Jac Brown highlighted Shades' early guilty pleas, urging the court to consider this in sentencing. Judge Carl Harrison imposed a 14-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, along with 140 hours of unpaid work and a 20-day rehabilitation activity requirement. Additionally, Shades was ordered to register as a sex offender for 10 years and was made subject to a sexual harm prevention order for the same duration.

The case underscores ongoing efforts by Gwent Police to combat child sexual exploitation through targeted operations and raids. According to court records from Wales Updates, this incident reflects a broader pattern of similar cases in the region, with Shades' possession of explicit material contributing to the demand for such abusive content.
