Offence Summary

Luke Connor, a paedophile from County Durham, was sentenced to 15 years in prison for sexually assaulting two young girls under 13, including one penetrative assault and inciting sexual activity.

Full Description

At Durham Crown Court, Luke Connor, a 43-year-old man formerly residing on Front Street in Burnhope, County Durham, was convicted following a four-day trial in January for committing serious child sex offences against two young girls.

Connor was found guilty of two counts of sexually assaulting girls under 13—one involving penetrative assault—and one count of causing or inciting a girl under 13 to engage in sexual activity. These offences, which came to light in recent years, were committed prior to some of his earlier convictions for child sex offending and acts of violence against past partners. The judge, Richard Bennett, described Connor as an 'opportunist child sex offender' with a 'deviant sexual interest in young girls', noting that he had caused severe psychological harm to his victims.

Prosecutor Shaun Dodds presented impact statements from the victims. One victim recounted the traumatic experiences from her young childhood that had distressed her for as long as she could remember, only speaking out more than a dozen years later upon discovering she was not the sole victim. She referred to Connor as a 'monster' who had taken advantage of others and expressed hope that he would never harm anyone else. The other victim described the trauma of cross-examination regarding her delayed disclosure and recalled being accused of 'ruining lives' upon Connor's conviction, as if they were the guilty parties.

  • Connor had a prior child sex conviction in January 2013, for which he served a four-year sentence and was subject to a lifetime notification requirement as a sex offender.
  • His defence, represented by Peter Moulson, acknowledged the psychological harm to the victims but argued the offences lacked aggravating features such as violence, alcohol, drugs, or grooming.

Judge Bennett sentenced Connor to consecutive terms of five and ten years, totalling 15 years' imprisonment, with an additional three-year extended licence period. As a designated dangerous offender, Connor must serve at least two-thirds of the ten-year element before parole eligibility, potentially the full term depending on the Parole Board's assessment. Twenty-year restraining orders were imposed for the protection of both victims.

The case was reported by Bruce Unwin, Crime and Court Reporter for The Northern Echo, highlighting Connor's history and the profound impact on the survivors.
