Offence Summary

A convicted sex offender who breached a restraining order by repeatedly staring and growling at his ex-partner, resulting in an 18-month jail term.

Full Description

Jozsef Bora, a 57-year-old man described by a judge as having an "unhealthy fixation" on his ex‑partner, was sent back to prison after breaching a restraining order by staring and growling at her near her home.

Bora, of no fixed address, appeared at Leeds Crown Court via video link from HMP Leeds, where he admitted the breach. The court heard that the restraining order had been imposed after he violently attacked the woman, for which he was jailed for 34 months in November 2023. The order was extended by 12 months in 2024 after he continued to write letters to her from prison.

Prosecutor Thomas Harris said the couple had been in a relationship for 12 years but it ended five years ago due to Bora's violent behaviour. On 29 September 2025, the victim was shopping in Hemsworth when she saw Bora staring at her and appearing to growl. She later disclosed to police that she had seen him in a Tesco store the week before, where he also stared and growled, though he was not charged for that incident. The woman told officers she felt he was purposely there to see her.

When arrested, Bora initially denied being in Hemsworth, claiming he had no reason to be there, but later admitted the breach. Judge Ray Singh noted Bora's defiant demeanour during sentencing, which included shaking his head throughout the hearing.

Judge Singh said: “Your temperament is of an individual who is besotted by the complainant and you simply will not leave her alone. There’s an unhealthy fixation on your part. Your previous convictions demonstrate your fixation. Despite the fact you went to prison on previous occasions, you are simply not going to learn.” He described the staring and growling as “sinister”.

The court was told that Bora has 15 previous convictions for 22 offences, including the attack on his ex‑partner. Crucially, the prosecutor revealed that Bora is a convicted sex offender, having previously been convicted of sexually assaulting a child under 13. No mitigation was offered after the judge indicated he would pass a sentence that would result in either immediate or imminent release, given the eight months Bora had already spent on remand.

Judge Singh jailed Bora for 18 months and confirmed that the restraining order would remain in place to protect the victim from his ongoing harassment.
