A man with learning difficulties, Kyran Wingfield-West, has been jailed for committing two counts of rape against a girl under 13 in north west Wales. The incidents occurred several years ago when Wingfield-West was 17 years old, and he was a resident of Anglesey at the time. The case came to light after the victim's father found disturbing messages on his daughter's phone, revealing her concern about possible pregnancy following sexual activity with Wingfield-West.
Prosecutor Jemma Gordon detailed the events at Caernarfon Crown Court, explaining that Wingfield-West had messaged the girl asking if he should bring a condom, to which she responded affirmatively. Despite this, he proceeded to rape her twice in a car park. When police involvement became imminent, Wingfield-West instructed the girl to delete a messaging app to cover his tracks, demonstrating an attempt to interfere with the investigation.
In her victim impact statement, the girl reflected on the lasting effects of the trauma: “Now that she is older she understands even more how wrong the defendant’s behaviour was.” She described how the ordeal has “tainted” her impression of her home and noted the difficulty it posed for her father. Defence barrister Dafydd Roberts argued that an expert report portrayed Wingfield-West as a “naive soul” , suggesting the encounters were “sex by agreement” , though he acknowledged the victim's age meant she could not consent.
Sentencing Her Honour Judge Nicola Jones emphasised the gravity of the offences, stating that the girl “did not have the capacity to give her consent” to sex as she was under 13. While accepting Wingfield-West's learning disability and immaturity, the judge reduced the sentence considering his mental health difficulties and guilty pleas. However, she highlighted his efforts to tamper with the police investigation. Wingfield-West, now residing in Gainsborough, Lincolnshire, received two years and eight months in a young offenders’ institution, along with indefinite restraining order, sex offender notification requirements, and a sexual harm prevention order.
This case underscores the severe consequences of child sexual exploitation, with the court prioritising victim protection and public safety through stringent measures. The proceedings were reported by Wales Updates on 5 October 2025, based on details from the Caernarfon Crown Court hearing.
