Offence Summary

Yusef Ibrahim raped a woman in the toilet of a Brighton nightclub after meeting her on the dancefloor. He was found guilty of rape and sexual assault and sentenced to six years in prison.

Full Description

On 24 September 2021, in the early hours of the morning, a horrific sexual assault occurred at a nightclub in Brighton, East Sussex. Yusef Ibrahim, then aged 18 and residing in Bromley, met a woman in her 20s on the dancefloor. According to CCTV footage reviewed by Sussex Police, the pair entered a toilet together, with the victim emerging shortly afterwards visibly distressed.

The woman immediately reported the incident to nightclub security staff, who contacted police and detained Ibrahim on site. She informed officers that Ibrahim had led her to the toilet, locked her in a cubicle, and raped her. The quick response from security ensured Ibrahim was held until police arrived, and the victim was taken to a place of safety.

Ibrahim was charged with rape and sexual assault. Following a trial at Lewes Crown Court, held in Chichester, he was found guilty. On 30 April 2024, at the same court, Judge Christopher Williams sentenced Ibrahim, now 21, to six years' imprisonment. The judge emphasised the severity of the offence, noting it had shattered the victim's sense of safety during what should have been an enjoyable night out.

  • Key Evidence: CCTV recordings showing the pair entering and the victim leaving the toilet; the victim's immediate disclosure and visible distress; Ibrahim's detention by staff.
  • Victim Impact: The woman demonstrated remarkable bravery throughout the investigation and trial, as highlighted by Detective Constable Elaine Welsh of Sussex Police.

Detective Constable Elaine Welsh stated: “This woman was simply trying to enjoy a night out when she was attacked in the most horrific way.” She praised the victim's strength and the “quick thinking” of her friends and security staff, which facilitated a swift arrest and preserved crucial evidence. In addition to his custodial sentence, Ibrahim was placed on the sex offenders register for life, a measure to protect the public from further risk.

The case underscores the importance of immediate reporting and the role of venue staff in preventing escalation. Sussex Police commended the collaborative efforts that led to this conviction, serving as a deterrent to similar predatory behaviour in nightlife settings. The incident took place in Brighton, a vibrant coastal city known for its nightlife, but one now marked by this serious crime.
