Offence Summary

Huw Meredydd Groom, a social care worker, was convicted of child sex offences after engaging in sexually explicit online discussions with undercover police officers posing as mothers of teenage girls, leading to a two-year prison sentence and a permanent ban from social care.

Full Description

Huw Meredydd Groom, a social care worker employed at Aran Hall School in Rhydymain, was exposed as a paedophile following a series of online interactions that led to his conviction for serious child sex offences. In 2023, Groom was sentenced at Caernarfon Crown Court to two years in prison for three counts of arranging or facilitating the commission of an offence of sexual activity with a child, as well as inciting a child to engage in sexual activity involving penetration. The court also imposed a sexual offences prevention order and a sexual harm prevention order, each lasting 10 years, to restrict his activities and protect the public.

The offences stemmed from Groom's online communications with three individuals he believed to be mothers of teenage girls. Unbeknownst to him, these were undercover police officers conducting a sting operation. During these conversations, Groom engaged in sexually explicit discussions, offering to teach the supposed teenagers how to perform sexual acts. The panel at the Social Care Wales fitness to practise hearing, held on 17 June 2024, reviewed these details and confirmed that none of the offences involved pupils from Aran Hall School, where Groom had worked.

Due to the severity of his convictions and his inclusion on the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) children's and adults' barring lists, the Social Care Wales panel concluded that Groom's fitness to practise was impaired. As a result, they issued a removal order, permanently striking him off the social care register. Groom did not attend the hearing. This decision ensures he is banned from working in social care roles across Wales, reflecting the panel's commitment to public safety in vulnerable sectors.

The case was reported by Cambrian News on 24 June 2024, highlighting the importance of safeguarding measures in educational and care environments. Groom, from Dolgellau in Gwynedd, has no further details on his personal background provided in the coverage.
