Offence Summary

Carl John Seed was jailed for 24 years after being convicted of a campaign of rape and sexual assaults against a young girl in Ryedale, whom he groomed and abused over several years, leading to her becoming suicidal.

Full Description

Carl John Seed, a 34-year-old paedophile from Leeds, has been sentenced to 24 years in prison for a prolonged 'campaign of rape' against a young girl in Ryedale, North Yorkshire. The abuse, which included grooming, sexual assaults, and forcing the victim to watch adult pornography, spanned several years and caused severe psychological trauma, culminating in the girl attempting suicide by overdose.

York Crown Court heard that Seed targeted the girl after obtaining sexual videos of children on his computer. He isolated her and subjected her to repeated rapes and assaults, with the jury convicting him of eight counts of rape, one attempted rape, and four sexual assaults. On one occasion, the abuse was so violent that Seed had to stop due to the pain inflicted on the victim, and another time, a second child was present during the incident. The victim eventually disclosed the abuse to a teacher, leading to Seed's arrest.

During the trial, the girl provided evidence despite Seed's denial of all 13 charges. She told a social worker, 'He said he loved me. Why, if he loved me, why did he do this to me?' Judge Simon Hickey described the offences as a deliberate campaign of abuse, noting Seed's predatory behaviour in seeking out a child to exploit. Following the conviction, Seed showed no reaction as the sentence was passed.

In addition to the 24-year custodial term, Seed received an extended four-year licence period, a lifelong sexual harm prevention order, and indefinite placement on the sex offenders' register. He is also barred for life from working with children or vulnerable adults and must serve at least 16 years before being eligible for parole. The case was heard at York Crown Court, with reporting by Megi Rychlikova for the Gazette & Herald.
