Full Description

A former police officer from Northern Ireland has been sentenced to six months in prison after admitting to possessing a large number of indecent images of children. Brian Connor, aged 46, from Clooney Road in Knockloughrim, County Londonderry, appeared at Londonderry Crown Court where he pleaded guilty to 27 specimen charges relating to 603 abusive images downloaded from the internet.

The court heard that the images were discovered on Connor's home computer in January of the previous year during an investigation by the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI). Following the discovery, Connor was immediately dismissed from his position within the PSNI. The judge presiding over the case remarked that the offences 'helped rob children of their childhood', highlighting the severe impact of such crimes on victims.

In addition to the custodial sentence, Connor was placed on the sex offenders register for a period of five years. A sex offences prevention order was also imposed, which includes strict conditions: he must notify authorities of any change in address upon release from prison, is prohibited from having unsupervised access to children, and is banned from accessing the internet for five years. This case underscores the PSNI's commitment to tackling child sexual exploitation, with the force having conducted the initial search that uncovered the material.

The sentencing took place at Londonderry Crown Court, as reported by the BBC. Connor's guilty plea was to specimen charges, representing the total of 603 images, which included various categories of indecent material involving children.
