Offence Summary

Jack Roberts raped a teenager by pinning her down and ignoring her protests, showing no regard for anything but his own selfish sexual desires. He was convicted at Cardiff Crown Court and sentenced to six-and-a-half years' detention.

Full Description

A 21-year-old man from Cwmbran, Jack Roberts, was sentenced at Cardiff Crown Court for raping a teenager in March 2020. The court heard that Roberts pinned his victim down during the attack, demonstrating a complete disregard for her wellbeing and focusing solely on his own selfish sexual desires. Following the assault, he manipulated the terrified young woman by instructing her not to report the incident to family members or the police.

Roberts, residing on Hinter Path in Fairwater, Cwmbran, denied the charge of rape during his trial, claiming that the sexual contact was consensual. However, the jury at Cardiff Crown Court rejected his account and found him guilty. The sentencing took place on Friday, 6 May 2022, before Recorder Bilal Siddique, who described Roberts' behaviour as manipulative and noted that he had shown little remorse, as evidenced by his continued assertion of innocence in the pre-sentence report.

In a victim impact statement read to the court, the teenager detailed the profound effects of the rape on her life. She described suffering from severe anxiety and depression, insomnia, panic attacks, and a newfound discomfort around males, such as on public transport. The trauma forced her to abandon her studies, fundamentally altering her future prospects. The court also learned that Roberts had no previous convictions and that character references portrayed him as a kind young man leading a pro-social lifestyle, with his defence solicitor, Marian Lewis, arguing that he had matured since the incident.

Recorder Siddique imposed a sentence of six-and-a-half years' detention in a young offenders' institution, reflecting the gravity of the offence. Roberts was also placed on the sex offenders' register for life. As he was led away to the cells, supporters in the public gallery shouted encouragement and blew kisses. This case was reported by Wales Online, with details emerging from the court proceedings at Cardiff Crown Court.
