Offence Summary

A former Leicestershire Police volunteer who admitted attempting to meet a 15-year-old boy for sex after grooming him online.

Full Description

Eric Scoins, 44, appeared at Leicester Magistrates' Court on 27 May 2026 where he was sentenced after pleading guilty to attempting to meet a child under 16 following a period of online communication.

The offence took place between 3 July and 6 July 2025 in Mountsorrel, Leicestershire, when the victim was aged 15. Scoins, of Hugh Squier Avenue, South Molton, Devon, was a volunteer with Leicestershire Police at the time of the offence and was dismissed in July 2025 after the matter was referred to the Professional Standards Department.

The court heard that Scoins is neurodiverse, has no previous convictions and voluntarily informed police of the offence. He was handed a 52-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, along with 100 hours of unpaid work and up to 25 days of rehabilitation activity. Scoins must register with police as a sex offender for 10 years and will be supervised by Barnstaple Magistrates' Court. He was also ordered to pay £85 in costs and a £187 surcharge.

Leicestershire Police confirmed that the offences were not linked to his voluntary role. Scoins admitted the offence on 13 April 2026 before being sentenced on 27 May 2026.
