Nathan Carby was sentenced to eight years in prison for sexually assaulting and raping a vulnerable woman in Bodmin.

Full Description

Nathan Carby, 28, from Bodmin, Cornwall, was jailed for eight years at Truro Crown Court on 14 October 2025 after a jury found him guilty of sexual assault, intentional strangulation, oral rape, assault by beating, and assault by penetration. The offences left his victim feeling isolated, depressed, and anxious, having 'destroyed my mental health and confidence', as stated in her impact statement.

The court described the victim as an 'exceptionally vulnerable individual', with Carby exploiting this vulnerability while under the influence of drink or drugs. The assaults involved physical violence, including strangulation, and non-consensual sexual acts.

Defence barrister Rupert Taylor noted that Carby had benefited from custody, appearing 'calm and rational' and transformed 'both physically and mentally'. Judge Simon Carr acknowledged the severity, stating he had 'no doubt Carby played on this' vulnerability. Carby, of Margaret Crescent, Bodmin, was placed on the sex offenders' register for life, with a restraining order imposed.
