Offence Summary

David Charles Greenwood admitted to making and possessing indecent images of children and publishing an obscene article. He pleaded guilty at South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court and awaits sentencing at Carlisle Crown Court.

Full Description

David Charles Greenwood, a 65-year-old man from Avenham Lane in Preston, appeared at South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court on December 11, where he pleaded guilty to three counts of making indecent photographs of a child and one count of publishing an obscene article.

The charges stemmed from offences committed in Penrith on or before May 26, 2023. Greenwood conceded that he had made seven Category A images—the most severe classification—seven Category B images, and 21 Category C images involving children. Additionally, during an online chat, he published an obscene article, as detailed in the court proceedings.

Prosecutor Peter Kelly outlined the nature of the offences to the court, noting that Greenwood was previously of good character. Due to the seriousness of the charges and the limitations of the magistrates’ sentencing powers, the case was adjourned for the preparation of a pre-sentence report.

Magistrates granted Greenwood conditional bail and imposed immediate notification requirements, requiring him to sign the sex offenders register. Sentencing is scheduled for January 9, 2024, at Carlisle Crown Court.

This case highlights ongoing efforts by authorities in Cumbria to combat child sexual exploitation through digital means. The court appearance was reported by Alec Whitaker, Court Reporter for The Mail, based on proceedings at South Cumbria Magistrates’ Court.
