Full Description

Thomas Brewerton, a 25-year-old man from Kingswinford in the West Midlands, was jailed following his attempt to commit a serious sexual offence against a child. In November 2023, Brewerton travelled more than 70 miles from his home on Cot Lane to Swindon in Wiltshire, intending to rape a girl under the age of 13. Unbeknownst to him, the arrangement had been uncovered by police, and instead of meeting the child, he was arrested by officers upon arrival.

The case was investigated by the South West Regional Organised Crime Unit (SWROCU), part of a national network of specialist officers monitoring online activities to identify and intervene against individuals with a sexual interest in children. Detectives described Brewerton's actions as an 'appalling intention to commit a devastating offence,' highlighting the swift action taken to prevent any harm.

Brewerton appeared at Swindon Crown Court on 18 March 2024, where he pleaded guilty to arranging or facilitating the commission of an offence, or causing or inciting a child under 13 to engage in penetration. He was sentenced to six years and four months' imprisonment. In addition, an indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order was imposed to protect the public from further risk.

Detective Inspector Dave Wells from SWROCU commented on the case, stating: 'Thomas Brewerton is a dangerous individual who sought to rape a child and my officers acted swiftly to detain him. My team is part of a national network of specialist officers who are across the internet looking to track down people with a sexual interest in children and intervene before any harm can occur.' He further noted that 'the sentence handed down to Brewerton today, along with the conditions of his SHPO, will help protect the most vulnerable people in our communities and keep them safe from sexual harm.'

The court proceedings underscored the effectiveness of proactive policing in combating child sexual exploitation, with Brewerton's arrest preventing a potential tragedy. This case serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to safeguard children from online grooming and predatory behaviour.
