Offence Summary

Alec Calvert, a 77-year-old pensioner, was sentenced to 24 years in prison for multiple sexual offences against three children, including rape and sexual assault, plus making indecent images.

Full Description

Alec Calvert, a 77-year-old pensioner from St Helen Auckland with no prior convictions, was convicted at Durham Crown Court in January 2025 of 11 counts of sexual offences against three young victims, receiving a total of 24 years' imprisonment. Calvert denied all charges, accusing the victims of fabricating allegations, but a jury returned unanimous guilty verdicts after a nine-day trial. He had already admitted two counts of making indecent images of a child and one of possessing extreme pornography.

The offences spanned several years and involved grooming behaviour, particularly with an older girl whom Calvert bought alcohol for, persuaded to send intimate images, and drove to secluded areas for sexual assault. Police arrested him last summer after finding him nearly naked with the girl in his car at a disused docks area. The charges included seven counts of sexual assault, one of rape, one of inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, one of sexual communication with a child, and one of attempted sexual assault, all against victims under 18.

Judge Nathan Adams characterised the crimes as repeat offending demonstrating Calvert's 'paedophilic proclivities for his own sexual gratification'. Consecutive sentences were imposed for each victim, totalling 24 years, with Calvert required to serve at least two-thirds (16 years) before Parole Board consideration for release. He may serve the full term, followed by a two-year extended licence if released. Calvert must register as a sex offender for life.

An indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order was imposed, prohibiting contact with anyone under 18 and restricting internet use. Indefinite restraining orders were also issued barring contact with the three victims. The case was handled by Durham Constabulary, highlighting Calvert's long-term abuse patterns.
