Offence Summary

Frederick William English sexually assaulted a woman while she was having a seizure, after following her in a supermarket and ignoring a previous court order to stay away, leading to an eight-and-a-half-year sentence.

Full Description

Frederick William English, 42, from Dickson Road, Blackpool, was jailed for eight and a half years after committing a sexual assault on a vulnerable woman during her seizure. English, an alcoholic with prior convictions for attacking women, had been ordered to stay away from the victim following a previous assault. Despite this, he spotted her in a Blackpool supermarket, followed her, and begged her to buy him cider. He then used a false name to join a social gathering at her home.

During the gathering, English claimed he was unwell and needed sectioning, asking the woman for a kiss. When she refused, he attacked her, twisting her leg and causing her neck to crack. The woman fought him off, but as English had a seizure, she helped by removing his teeth to prevent injury. Upon recovering, he bit her hand severely. Later, as she suffered her own seizure, English sexually assaulted her while she was incapacitated on the floor, ignoring her pleas to stop. She later confronted him, calling his actions 'disgusting'.

The victim sought help from an ex-partner and received hospital treatment for her hand injury. At Preston Crown Court, Judge Graham Knowles QC described the offence as 'vile, disgusting, and extremely serious', noting English's persistence in violence and contempt for the victim. He highlighted the assault occurring during her seizure, contrasting it with her earlier aid to him. English was sentenced as a dangerous offender to five and a half years custody plus three years on extended licence for sexual assault, with concurrent terms for ABH and breaching a court order. DC Isobel Garratt of West CID praised the victim's bravery and emphasized the sentence's reflection of the offence's gravity.

  • Victim's Experience: The woman offered help during English's seizure but received violence and assault in return.
