Offence Summary

Linda Brunning assisted in the systematic sexual abuse of children at a care home by restraining a boy during an assault and indecently assaulting another child herself.

Full Description

Linda Brunning, 66, from Sowerby Bridge, was convicted at Bradford Crown Court for her role in the systematic abuse of vulnerable children at Skircoat Lodge Care Home in Halifax. As assistant to the home's manager, Malcolm Phillips, Brunning participated in the sexual exploitation of boys and girls over nearly two decades, from 1976 to 1994.

The court heard harrowing accounts from six victims who suffered under Phillips' regime of fear, where he used his position of authority for his own sexual gratification. Brunning was found guilty of restraining one boy while Phillips sexually assaulted him and of indecently assaulting another boy herself while drying him after a shower. A trial-of-facts was held for Phillips, who at 93 years old was deemed unfit to stand trial, but the jury determined he had committed the alleged acts.

Brunning, overcome with emotion, put her head in her hands and sobbed as the verdicts were read out. The case, investigated by West Yorkshire Police, exposed the horrific abuse within the children's home, leading to Brunning's conviction for her direct involvement in the sexual offences.
