Full Description

Andong Ashu, a 45-year-old scientist employed by the National Health Service (NHS), has been found guilty of multiple serious sexual offences against a young girl whom he abused over several years. Originally from Cameroon, Ashu arrived in the UK as a refugee in 2002, fleeing persecution in his home country. He was granted asylum, pursued higher education with the support of a government grant, and obtained a science degree that led to his employment in NHS laboratories. At the time of his arrest, he was working in Hull, monitoring blood samples, and had become a British citizen. He is married to another Cameroonian and is a father of three children.

The court heard that Ashu began abusing his victim when she was just 11 years old. The assaults escalated in severity, culminating in repeated rapes. Ashu, who reportedly knew the girl through his professional or community connections, warned her that no one would believe her complaints because she was 'only a child'. In a further attempt to ensure her silence, he attempted to bribe her with payments of £10 and £20. The abuse continued for years until the victim, having endured significant trauma, gathered the courage to report the matter to the police.

At Hull Crown Court, following a five-day trial, a jury deliberated for six hours before convicting Ashu on Monday of four counts of rape and seven counts of sexual assault—totalling 11 sexual offences. As the verdicts were read out, Ashu collapsed in the dock and required assistance from a custody officer. His wife, a careers teacher, was visibly distraught, sobbing hysterically in the public gallery. Despite the conviction, she has vowed to stand by him.

Judge [name not specified in article] remanded Ashu in custody and warned that he faces a prison term of years when sentenced later this month. Due to his British citizenship, officials have confirmed he cannot be deported upon release. The case highlights the profound betrayal of trust by a professional in a position of authority within the healthcare system.
