Offence Summary

Mark Anthony Sinclair, a convicted sex offender, was jailed for 44 months after admitting to breaching his Sexual Harm Prevention Order by engaging in sexual communication with someone he believed to be a 12-year-old girl and possessing indecent images of children.

Full Description

Mark Anthony Sinclair, a 36-year-old man formerly residing in Kettering, Northamptonshire, was sentenced to 44 months in prison on 25 February 2026 at Northampton Crown Court for multiple sexual offences. Sinclair had previously been convicted of a sexual offence involving a child under 16, leading to the imposition of a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) by Wood Green Crown Court in January 2024. The SHPO included strict conditions, such as prohibiting the deletion of internet history and barring unsupervised contact or communication with any child under 18.

Despite these restrictions, in May 2025, Sinclair breached the order by engaging with an individual he believed to be a 12-year-old girl in an online chat room. He initiated contact and escalated the conversation to a private messaging application, sending messages of a sexual nature. Unbeknownst to Sinclair, the profile was part of a covert police operation designed to identify and safeguard children from online predators. Evidence of this breach was forwarded to Northamptonshire Police's Management of Sexual or Violent Offenders (MOSOVO) team.

On 21 May 2025, officers from the MOSOVO team arrested Sinclair and seized his mobile phone. Forensic examination of the device revealed three counts of making indecent photographs or pseudo-photographs of children. Sinclair was charged with breaching his SHPO, attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child as an adult, and the possession of indecent images. The following day, on 22 May 2025, he appeared before Northampton Magistrates' Court, where his case was committed to Northampton Crown Court for trial.

Sinclair pleaded guilty to all charges on 24 July 2025. At his sentencing hearing in February 2026, Judge [name not specified in article] imposed a custodial sentence of 44 months, equivalent to three years and eight months. Additionally, Sinclair was required to remain on the Sex Offenders' Register for 10 years to monitor his activities and protect the public.

PC Holly Morgan-Humphrey, who led the investigation as part of Northamptonshire Police's Paedophile Online Investigation Team (POLIT), commented on the case: 'Mark Sinclair thought he was sending private messages of a sexual nature to an unknown 12-year-old girl he befriended in an online chat room. Although thankfully there was not a real child in this case, it does not lessen the seriousness of it at all as the content of his messages were not only extremely concerning but also showed a total disregard for the court order put in place to protect children from him.' She further emphasised the force's commitment: 'I hope this case reassures the public that we are working proactively to continue to keep children in Northamptonshire safe from online predators and to bring anyone who threatens that safety to justice.'

This case, reported by Northamptonshire Police on 30 March 2026, underscores the effectiveness of undercover operations in combating online child sexual exploitation and the enforcement of protective orders against known offenders. Sinclair's actions demonstrated a persistent risk to children, justifying the stringent sentence and ongoing registration requirements.
