Full Description

A former resident of Cardigan, Kevin John Turner, has been imprisoned for 20 years following his conviction for multiple sexual offences against a young girl. The case, heard at Swansea Crown Court, involved a five-day trial where Turner was found guilty of eight counts of rape, three counts of sexual activity with a child, four counts of sexual assault, and possession of indecent images of a child.

The offences took place over a four-year period when Turner was living in Tremain, a village just north of Cardigan in Ceredigion. At the time of the abuse, the victim was 12 years old. Turner, now 53 and residing in Felindre, Swansea, had initially denied the rape charges but admitted to having sexual relations with the girl, claiming she was 14 or 15 and that it was consensual. However, the prosecution, led by Catherine Richards, challenged this account, accusing Turner of positively enjoying giving evidence and revealing his obsession with young girls.

Judge Geraint Walters remanded Turner in custody during the trial, informing him to expect a lengthy prison term pending reports. In the sentencing, the judge imposed a 20-year custodial sentence, with a minimum term of 13 years and six months to be served before eligibility for parole. Additionally, Turner has been ordered to register as a sex offender for life, reflecting the severity and nature of his crimes.

Detective Inspector Richard Yelland of Dyfed-Powys Police commented on the outcome, stating: “Dyfed-Powys Police welcomes the lengthy sentence handed down in this case. The harm caused to victims of sexual abuse lasts far beyond the incident. The sentencing recognises the lifetime of psychological harm caused to Turner’s victim.” He highlighted the challenging investigation conducted by detectives in Ceredigion, which provided a strong evidence package to the courts, ensuring justice was served.

The case underscores the long-term impact of sexual abuse on victims and the determination of law enforcement to pursue such perpetrators. Turner’s confession to an obsession with young girls was a key element in the prosecution's case, painting a picture of deliberate and repeated exploitation.
