Offence Summary

Carl Bray, a convicted sex offender, was jailed for 21 months after breaching his Sexual Harm Prevention Order by using prohibited social media apps and possessing unauthorised devices. This followed his 2023 conviction for attempting to engage in sexual communications with a child.

Full Description

Carl Bray, a 46-year-old resident of Union Road in Southampton, has been sentenced to 21 months in prison for breaching the terms of his Sexual Harm Prevention Order. The order was imposed following his conviction in October 2023 for attempting to engage in sexual communications with a child, for which he received a 15-month suspended sentence for 24 months.

In September 2024, officers from Hampshire Constabulary conducted a routine examination of Bray's electronic devices to ensure compliance with the indefinite Sexual Harm Prevention Order. During this inspection, they discovered that Bray had downloaded and used several social media applications, including Snapchat, Telegram, TikTok, and Zangi, to communicate with unknown individuals. To conceal his activities, Bray subsequently deleted these apps from his devices.

Further investigation at Bray's property revealed two additional electronic devices that he was not permitted to possess under the terms of his order. These findings led to charges of breaching the Sexual Harm Prevention Order and failing to comply with sex offender register requirements.

The case was heard at Southampton Crown Court, where Bray was sentenced on a date in late 2024. According to reports from the Daily Echo, the breach underscored the ongoing risks posed by non-compliance with such protective measures. Hampshire Constabulary emphasised the importance of these orders in preventing further harm, stating that any violations would be met with firm action.

Bray's prior conviction involved attempts to communicate sexually with a child, highlighting a pattern of behaviour that necessitated strict monitoring. The court determined that the breaches warranted immediate custody to protect the public.
