Full Description

Brian Manders, a 79-year-old resident of Normandy in Surrey, has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for a series of child sex abuse offences that took place during the 1970s and 1980s. The offences came to light decades later, leading to his arrest and trial at Guildford Crown Court.

Manders was found guilty on 18 counts of sexual abuse following a trial that concluded on 12 December. He had been in custody since the verdict and was formally sentenced on 30 January at Guildford Crown Court. The court heard that Manders had carried out sustained sexual attacks on a young girl over several years before she reached the age of 16. In addition, he forced another girl to be present during some of these attacks and abused her as well, though he was not prosecuted for the offences against the second victim. The presence of the second child during the assaults was considered an aggravating factor by the court.

The prosecution detailed Manders' prior criminal history, which included three cautions: two in 1992 for indecent assault against a child, and one in the 1970s for exposing himself to a woman while employed as a council facilities cleaner. These previous incidents underscored the pattern of his behaviour and influenced the severity of the sentence imposed.

Harrowing victim impact statements were read in court, with one of the women choosing to deliver hers personally. Addressing Manders directly, she stated: "I want my life back. We get one chance at life and mine has been tainted by you. I want to start living life to the full again. With time, support and counselling, hopefully I will find my freedom, just as you lose yours." Both women described the profound and lasting effects of the abuse on their mental and physical health, as well as their relationships.

Given his age, Manders is likely to spend the remainder of his life in prison, as he will not be eligible for parole for at least 12 years. The sentencing reflects the gravity of the offences and the court's commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals from such predators. This case was reported by the Farnham Herald, based on details from the court proceedings.
