Full Description

A convicted paedophile and former teacher, anonymised as Evan in official proceedings, is serving an eight-year prison sentence for multiple sex offences committed against young girls. Jailed in 2021 at the High Court in Edinburgh, Evan's crimes involved seven offences against five victims aged between 12 and 16, including instances of rape and sexual assault.

The offences spanned periods when Evan was employed as a teacher at Ovenstone Residential School in Pittenweem, Fife, during the 1980s. The school catered to children with behavioural and emotional problems. Three of the offences reportedly occurred on the school premises, though the victims were not pupils there. Despite the convictions, Evan denied the crimes during his testimony to the Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry (SCAI) on 8 July 2025, describing allegations of abuse at the school as a 'load of rubbish'.

Evan provided evidence via videolink from prison, where he remains incarcerated. The SCAI, which is investigating historical abuse in residential settings such as boarding schools, religious establishments, and foster care across Scotland, granted him anonymity and referred to him only as Evan. He was specifically questioned about three convictions related to rape and sexual assault on the school grounds but maintained his innocence throughout.

The inquiry heard details of Evan's role at the school and the overlapping timeline of his offences. This case forms part of a broader examination of systemic failures in child protection within Scottish residential institutions. Evan's conviction underscores the long-term impact of such abuses, with the High Court imposing the eight-year custodial sentence to reflect the severity of the seven offences.
