Full Description

A 38-year-old man from Meir, Staffordshire, has been sentenced to five years' imprisonment after being convicted of a historical sexual offence against a child. Levi Watkis was found guilty of sexual activity with a girl aged between 13 and 15, which occurred between July 2006 and July 2007. The trial took place at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court in May 2021, where the jury heard evidence detailing how Watkis exploited the victim's youth and vulnerability.

According to court proceedings reported by Moorlands Radio, Watkis took advantage of the victim by paying her compliments in the lead-up to the assault. The incident happened when they were alone, and he pressurised and intimidated her into compliance. Detective Inspector Zoe Kelsall of Staffordshire Police commended the victim's bravery in coming forward, stating: "Watkis took advantage of his victim’s age by paying her compliments in the run up to the attack. They were alone and he pressurised and scared her into doing what he said. I pay tribute to the victim, who has shown tremendous bravery in coming forward and allowing us to bring this case before the courts."

The sentencing, which occurred shortly after the trial in 2021, resulted in Watkis being placed on the Sex Offenders Register for life. This case underscores the commitment of Staffordshire Police to pursuing justice for historical sexual crimes, no matter how much time has passed. DI Kelsall further noted: "Historic crimes can be challenging to take on but we hope this adds as a reminder to people that we will continue to do whatever is necessary to bring those responsible to justice, no matter how far in the past these crimes might have taken place." The conviction was secured through Staffordshire Police's investigation, highlighting their dedication to protecting vulnerable individuals.
