Full Description

A paedophile from Walthamstow has been jailed for molesting a six-year-old girl in her home in Bromley, south-east London. Nichola Mezzadri, aged 27 and originally from Milan, Italy, was invited to a family party by a friend on 19 August 2012. During the event, while the young girl was sleeping in her mother’s bedroom, Mezzadri entered the room and carried out the sexual assault.

The assault was interrupted when the girl’s father entered the room, prompting Mezzadri to flee the scene. Police were called around 3am and arrested the suspect shortly afterwards. The case was investigated by the Metropolitan Police's Sapphire team, which specialises in sexual offences.

Mezzadri was found guilty on 8 January following a trial at Woolwich Crown Court. He was sentenced the following day to two-and-a-half years' imprisonment. The court heard details of the harrowing attack, which has had a profound impact on the victim and her family.

Detective Chief Inspector Pete Thomas, from the Sapphire team, commended the victim’s courage in the statement: "The victim has shown immense courage throughout this trial, which was no doubt very harrowing and distressing for both her and her family. I would like to commend the young victim in this case and her parents, without whom the conviction could not have been achieved." He added: "My team worked tirelessly on this case. Their professionalism and tenacity has resulted in a dangerous individual being sent to prison. I hope this conviction will provide reassurance to all our communities that we will relentlessly pursue those who commit these dreadful crimes against children."

The sentencing brings closure to a case that highlighted the vulnerability of children at social gatherings and the swift response of law enforcement in protecting them. This article is based on reporting from the Guardian Series and associated sources.
