Offence Summary

William Abbott admitted to sending sexual messages to online profiles he believed belonged to young teenagers, including discussions of sexual acts and sharing an image of his erect penis, and pleaded guilty to making over 70 indecent images of children.

Full Description

William Abbott, a 43-year-old resident of North Walsham, Norfolk, appeared at Norwich Crown Court where he pleaded guilty to six sexual offences involving online communications with individuals he believed to be young teenagers.

The offences occurred between February and April 2024. Abbott engaged in explicit conversations with an online profile named 'Bi Boy', which he believed was operated by a 14-year-old boy, discussing his desire to have sex. In another instance, he sent a photograph of his erect penis to an account purporting to be a 13-year-old girl, with the intent of obtaining sexual gratification. Additionally, Abbott admitted to making more than 70 indecent images of children, including category A material, which represents the most serious classification of such offences. He also pleaded guilty to sending obscene messages.

During the court hearing, prosecutors offered no evidence on two further charges against Abbott: attempted sexual communication with a child and attempting to incite a child into sexual activity, both of which he had denied. Judge Anthony Bate addressed Abbott, stating that all options remain open regarding sentencing, explicitly noting that prison had not been ruled out. Abbott was granted bail pending his sentencing hearing scheduled for 7 January 2025, but was immediately placed on the sex offenders’ register.

The case was reported by the Eastern Daily Press, with coverage by crime correspondent Simon Parkin, highlighting the dangers of online grooming and the possession of child sexual abuse material. Norfolk Constabulary investigated the matter, leading to Abbott's arrest and charges.
