Daniel Roberts, a 31-year-old resident of Jorvik Close in York, was sentenced to four years in prison at York Crown Court for a series of serious sexual offences related to child abuse material. Described by North Yorkshire Police as a dangerous sexual predator, Roberts had pleaded guilty to 18 charges, including six counts of distributing indecent images of children, making indecent images of children, possession of extreme pornographic images, and possession of prohibited images of children.
The investigation into Roberts began in June 2022 when North Yorkshire Police launched an inquiry into his activities. Despite being on police bail, court bail, and already registered as a convicted sex offender, Roberts continued to commit offences throughout the investigation period. Officers seized his electronic devices, which revealed a collection of Category A, B, and C indecent images of children, as well as extreme pornography. These materials depicted the sexual abuse of young children, highlighting the ongoing harm caused to victims each time such images are accessed or shared.
Roberts first appeared in court on 19 November, where he was remanded in custody following his guilty pleas. His sentencing occurred on 21 March 2025, resulting in a four-year custodial term accompanied by a four-year extended licence period to manage his risk to the public upon release. The court proceedings underscored Roberts' enduring sexual interest in child abuse imagery, as noted by the authorities.
Detective Constable Lucy Wise of North Yorkshire Police commented on the case, stating: “Roberts is a dangerous individual with an enduring sexual interest in accessing child abuse images. Accessing or downloading indecent images of children is not a victimless crime; perpetrators often don’t stop to think about the lives of young children destroyed by the abuse that takes place behind these images. The children depicted in these sexual abuse images are continuously re-victimised when these are accessed and distributed on the internet. Perpetrators like Roberts allow this to happen, purely for their own selfish gratification.” She further emphasised the force's commitment: “North Yorkshire Police are committed to preventing child sexual abuse and helping victims by bringing offenders to justice.”
This case, reported by YorkMix, serves as a stark reminder of the persistent efforts by law enforcement to combat online child exploitation in the United Kingdom. Roberts' actions not only violated legal boundaries but also perpetuated the trauma inflicted on child victims worldwide.
