A 21-year-old man from Keighley, West Yorkshire, has been sentenced to five years in prison for a series of sexual offences against underage girls. Aidan Whittingham, who resides on Whinfield Avenue, was convicted of making and distributing indecent images of a child, voyeurism, and sexual activity with a child. The case, heard at Bradford Crown Court, highlighted Whittingham's deliberate targeting of young females despite his learning difficulties.
The offences came to light following reports from victims who bravely came forward. Whittingham distributed a nude photograph of one underage girl to her relative and secretly recorded sexual contact with another underage girl without her knowledge. He also had sexual intercourse with a third teenage girl, though she faced accusations of lying from others despite his conviction. Whittingham pleaded guilty to the charges related to indecent images but was found guilty of voyeurism and sexual activity with a child after a trial in October 2023.
During the sentencing on 29 April 2024, Recorder Jackson KC imposed a five-year custodial sentence, noting that Whittingham's pattern of offending had escalated. The judge rejected arguments from the defence about Whittingham's learning disability and lack of maturity, stating, 'Whittingham knew what he was doing, and intended to do, and it was not a consequence of his learning difficulties.' The sentence was mitigated slightly due to his young age and vulnerabilities, but the judge emphasised the seriousness of the crimes. In addition to the jail term, Whittingham must register as a sex offender for life and comply with an indefinite sexual harm prevention order.
Barrister Abigail Langford, representing Whittingham, highlighted expert reports from a psychiatrist and psychologist that pointed to his immaturity and vulnerability, as well as the over a year he had spent in custody on remand. However, the court determined that these factors did not excuse his actions. Detective Constable Paul Maxwell from the Child Vulnerable to Exploitation Team in Bradford welcomed the sentence, describing Whittingham as 'a danger to children' and praising the victims' bravery in reporting the crimes. The investigation was conducted by West Yorkshire Police, who have a dedicated specialist safeguarding team to support victims and ensure justice in such cases.
This case underscores the ongoing efforts to protect children from sexual exploitation in West Yorkshire, with authorities taking a firm stance against offenders who target vulnerable young people.
