Full Description

A Scarborough man, Trevor William Lee, aged 63, from Columbus Ravine, has been sentenced to 31 years in prison at Leeds Crown Court for a series of historical child abuse offences committed across North and West Yorkshire.

Lee, who worked as a bus and coach driver in Scarborough and was publicly regarded as a respected and trusted figure in his community and among his employers, was found guilty of 16 offences following a six-day trial last month. The convictions include eight counts of indecent assault on a child and eight counts of gross indecency with a child, all involving four girl victims. These crimes took place between 1995 and 2007 in locations including Bradford, Leeds, and Scarborough.

The jury was unable to reach a verdict on an additional child abuse charge relating to a fifth girl and acquitted Lee of three other similar offences. In addition to the 31-year custodial sentence, the judge imposed an extended three-year licence period, under which Lee will face strict public protection measures upon release, with immediate return to prison for any non-compliance.

The investigation into Lee had a complex history. He was previously probed by West Yorkshire Police in 2000 and 2006, and by North Yorkshire Police in 2008, over multiple child abuse allegations, but each inquiry concluded with no further action. It was not until a fresh complaint in 2017 that North Yorkshire Police relaunched a thorough investigation. Detective Constable Nick Burton from Scarborough CID led the effort, re-examining all prior allegations, tracking down and interviewing now-adult witnesses who had not been located earlier, and collaborating closely with the Crown Prosecution Service’s Complex Case Unit to build a robust case.

DC Burton highlighted the victims' resilience, noting that some had reported the abuse to police for the third time. He stated: “All the victims showed astonishing determination in making complaints to North Yorkshire Police again. For some of them, it was the third time they had made a report to the police. Each had to re-live the most traumatic of experiences from their childhoods. I have nothing but praise for their bravery.” He further described Lee as showing no remorse, maintaining his innocence and claiming the victims fabricated the allegations, adding: “This despicable man ruined their childhoods and has continued to haunt their adult lives. I hope the outcome at court will bring them some sense of justice and give them strength and hope to move on from their ordeal.”

The case, reported by Karen Liu for Greatest Hits Radio Yorkshire Coast on 18th August 2021, underscores the persistence required in tackling historical sexual offences against children.
