Offence Summary

Raj Singh Barsran was jailed for rape and sexual assault as a member of the Huddersfield grooming gang that exploited vulnerable young girls.

Full Description

Raj Singh Barsran, 34, from Caldercliffe Road, Berry Brow, was convicted in the first Huddersfield grooming trial at Leeds Crown Court in 2018. Between 2004 and 2011, the gang groomed and abused at least 15 girls aged 11 to 17, involving rape, trafficking, and violence. Barsran was found guilty of one offence of rape and two counts of sexual assault.

The exploitation included luring victims into false relationships for sexual purposes. On 7 June 2018, he was sentenced to 17 years, with Judge Marson QC condemning the 'perverted gratification' sought by the group. Reporting restrictions were subsequently lifted.

The investigation by West Yorkshire Police revealed deep trauma, including suicide attempts among victims. CPS comments reinforced the deliberate nature of the targeting, leading to broader safeguarding reforms.
