Offence Summary

Shannon Leigh Newth was sentenced to 16 years in prison for sexually assaulting a young child in 2011. The case came to light in 2023 after the victim reported the abuse prompted by a police social media post.

Full Description

A 38-year-old man, Shannon Leigh Newth, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison for historic sexual offences committed against a young child over a decade ago. The abuse occurred in 2011 when the victim was just seven years old, involving sexual assault that profoundly impacted the child's life.

The investigation began in 2023, triggered by the victim's decision to report the offences after encountering a Facebook post from South Wales Police highlighting a similar case. This post encouraged survivors to come forward, demonstrating the lasting effects of such trauma and the importance of delayed reporting in sexual abuse investigations. Detective Georgia Davies, the investigating officer, commended the victim's bravery, stating: "This is a case where the victim didn’t feel comfortable disclosing the offences to anyone until several years later. I want to thank the victim in this case for their bravery and strength in coming forward and speaking to us and their commitment throughout the course of the investigation."

The offences represented a severe violation of the child's innocence, as Davies further noted: "The offences were a dreadful ordeal for a young child to have to go through when they should have been free to enjoy their childhood. By speaking out, even after so many years, they have made sure that Newth is behind bars where he can’t hurt anyone else." Newth was sentenced on 18 October 2024 at a court in South Wales, where he also received a lifetime restraining order to protect the victim and prevent future harm.

South Wales Police emphasised their commitment to supporting victims of sexual assault, regardless of the time elapsed since the incident. The force's report on the case, published on their official website, underscores the role of public awareness campaigns in prompting disclosures and ensuring justice for historic crimes. This sentencing serves as a reminder of the long-term pursuit of accountability in child sexual abuse cases.
