Full Description

A 71-year-old man from Tamworth has been sentenced to 13 years in prison following his conviction on serious child sex offences at Shrewsbury Crown Court. Karl Smith was found guilty of raping a female under the age of 16, six counts of indecent assault on a girl under the age of 14, and two counts of indecency with a girl under 14 years of age. The trial took place in February 2025, and sentencing occurred on 9 May 2025.

The allegations against Smith were first reported to Staffordshire Police in 2019, prompting the child protection team to launch a thorough investigation. Despite Smith's denials during the trial, the jury convicted him based on the evidence presented. In addition to his custodial sentence, Smith has been placed on the Sex Offenders Register, ensuring ongoing monitoring to protect the public.

Detective Constable Laura Turner, the lead officer in the case, commended the victim's bravery in coming forward. She stated: "Despite denying the offences, a jury saw through Smith’s lies. The sentence was only possible thanks to the sheer determination and bravery of the victim and the impact has been significant and long-lasting." Turner also emphasised the importance of reporting such crimes, noting: "It is never too late to report a crime, and by doing so, you are helping us to bring these dangerous perpetrators to justice."

This case underscores Staffordshire Police's commitment to tackling child sexual exploitation, with the investigation highlighting the long-term effects on victims and the resolve to secure justice even years after the offences occurred. The conviction serves as a reminder of the severe consequences for those who commit such crimes against children.
