Offence Summary

Joshua Mahoney, a 34-year-old from Leeds, was jailed for possessing over 1,000 indecent images of child abuse, including extreme content depicting the abuse of a deceased infant, and a paedophile handbook.

Full Description

A repulsive paedophile from Leeds has been sentenced to prison after downloading some of the most vile images imaginable, including the abuse of a deceased infant. Joshua Mahoney, aged 34, was found in possession of more than 1,000 indecent images and videos, as well as extreme pornographic material and a so-called 'paedophile handbook' designed to help offenders avoid detection.

The case came to light on 13 July 2021, when officers from West Yorkshire Police executed a search warrant at Mahoney's home on Queen Street in Morley, Leeds. Intelligence had indicated that the IP address associated with the address was being used to download illegal images. Upon searching the property, police arrested Mahoney and seized a MacBook and a computer hard drive. Forensic examination revealed 817 Category A images – the most serious classification of child sexual abuse material – of which 113 were videos. Additionally, there were 430 Category B images including eight videos, and 566 Category C images including six videos.

  • 817 Category A images (113 videos)
  • 430 Category B images (8 videos)
  • 566 Category C images (6 videos)
  • 17 extreme pornographic images, including acts with animals and a dead baby
  • One 'paedophile manual'

Despite the overwhelming evidence, Mahoney initially gave a no-comment interview to police and pleaded not guilty to three counts of possessing indecent images and one count of possessing extreme pornographic images. His trial began in December 2023 at Leeds Crown Court. Bizarrely, during this period, Mahoney had enrolled in the Safer Lives sex offending programme and confessed his actions to a counsellor, yet maintained his not guilty plea in court for over two years.

Prosecutor Gareth Henderson-Moore outlined the horrific nature of the material during the proceedings. In mitigation, defence barrister Satpal Roth-Sharma argued that Mahoney's actions stemmed from an addiction that developed as a form of escapism during lockdown, and highlighted his eventual admission of wrongdoing as a positive step. However, Judge Ray Singh expressed strong disapproval, stating: "You stood there and uttered the words ‘not guilty’ when for two years you were admitting this to a counsellor. I have no understanding why on earth you pleaded not guilty. Some of the images have been described as being the most vile one could ever imagine."

Mahoney was sentenced to 28 months' imprisonment at Leeds Crown Court in January 2024. He was also placed on the sex offenders' register for 10 years and subjected to a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order (SHPO) restricting his internet use. The case was reported by the Yorkshire Evening Post, based on court proceedings and statements from West Yorkshire Police.
