Full Description

Mohan Babu, a 47-year-old former general practitioner from Emsworth, Hampshire, was sentenced to three and a half years in prison at Portsmouth Crown Court on 12 April 2024. He had been found guilty in January 2024 of four offences of sexual assault perpetrated against three women who were his patients. The assaults occurred between September 2019 and July 2021 while Babu was working as a GP in the Havant area.

The victims were all receiving medical treatment from Babu at the time of the incidents, highlighting a severe breach of trust. Babu exploited his professional position to carry out the assaults during medical examinations. In addition to the convictions, Babu was acquitted of three further counts of sexual assault involving two other women, one of whom was terminally ill and has since passed away.

The case was investigated by Hampshire Constabulary, with District Inspector Neal Harvey commenting on the severity of Babu's actions. "Today’s sentence sends a clear message that Mohan Babu’s behaviour was thoroughly inappropriate. He targeted women who were seeking medical support and were clearly vulnerable as they were seeking help from him. He assaulted them whilst undertaking medical examinations. Our thorough investigation demonstrated an utter disregard for the position of trust he was in with his patients," Harvey stated. The investigation underscored the police's commitment to pursuing such offenders, particularly in cases involving abuse of authority.

David Hawkins, a specialist in sexual abuse compensation law at Biscoes Solicitors, also addressed the case, noting, "Babu has rightly been jailed for his appalling betrayal of his patients’ trust. The people who all came forward independently of each other showed real bravery in seeing him convicted." The convictions were based on evidence from the victims who bravely reported the assaults, leading to Babu's trial and subsequent imprisonment. This case serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities in healthcare settings and the importance of accountability for medical professionals.
