Offence Summary

Izar Hussain raped and attempted to rape the victims, convicted of one count of rape and one count of attempted rape after being cleared of two counts.

Full Description

Izar Hussain, 32, from St Leonard's Road in Bradford, participated in the grooming and sexual abuse of two 14-year-old girls beginning in 2008 while they were in a children's home. As one of nine convicted men, Hussain was found guilty of one count of rape and one count of attempted rape, though cleared of two additional rape charges, contributing to the total of 22 offences including inciting child prostitution.

Prosecutor Karma Melly QC explained during the six-week trial at Bradford Crown Court that the gang used violence, drugs, and alcohol to exploit the girls' vulnerability. The abuse came to light in 2014 when Fiona Goddard, one of the victims, contacted police after viewing a BBC report on Rotherham abuses.

Sentenced to 16 years' imprisonment by Judge Jonathan Durham Hall QC, Hussain was condemned for disregarding standards of decent behaviour. Goddard, aged 25 and having waived anonymity, affirmed in her statement: 'Crimes like these haven't always been dealt with appropriately in the past, but I am proud to say that the police and other services are working really hard to change this.' The judge highlighted her courage and the prevalence of such grooming issues across UK cities.

Bradford Council announced a review by its Safeguarding Board to draw lessons from the case aimed at enhancing child protection measures.
