Ciaran Bright, a 30-year-old sports coach from Pennsylvania, Pentwyn, in Cardiff, Wales, was sentenced at Cardiff Magistrates' Court for possessing indecent images of children. He admitted to downloading eight such images between April 2 and July 18, including two in the most serious category A, two in category B, and four in category C. The images were accessed via the social media platform Kik, which reported his activity to the police, leading to his arrest in July.
Bright had been working in a physical education role at Christ the King Catholic primary school in Llanishen, Cardiff, where he provided PE sessions during school hours and ran an after-school club through Sports Xtra Cardiff, a company offering sports activities for children aged four to 12. His responsibilities included one-to-one coaching, raising significant concerns among parents upon learning of his offences. In early July, prior to his arrest, Bright had emailed parents advertising a £228 course of six one-to-one football sessions over the summer holiday.
The court heard that Bright's internet searches included terms such as 'young gymnast', 'girl cheerleaders', and 'children on leashes'. Although there was no evidence of direct abuse of any child, and the offences were committed away from the workplace, the case prompted widespread shock among parents. One parent told WalesOnline , 'Nobody ever said where he had gone so everyone assumed he was teaching in another school or club. I’m really shocked. The fact that he had contact with children during class and in after-school and holiday clubs is alarming.'
Bright, who had no previous convictions, was described in court as having a life that had 'spiralled' due to drug use, though he had since sought to address these issues. He was jobless at the time of sentencing and had a supportive family. On his LinkedIn profile, he portrayed himself as a director of Sports Xtra and claimed experience with clubs like Cardiff City and Swansea City, though Cardiff City confirmed he had never worked with them.
The school and Cardiff Council explained their delay in informing parents as necessary to avoid prejudicing the legal process, despite Bright pleading guilty nearly five weeks before the news broke. A council spokesman stated: 'Following notification that the individual was suspended by the company we have had assurances from the police that the alleged offences were committed away from the workplace and do not involve any children in any of our schools.' Sports Xtra issued a statement expressing shock: 'We are very shocked by this news and are deeply dismayed that Ciaran has behaved in such a deplorable way. Safeguarding is our highest priority and as soon as we learned about the allegations against Ciaran we immediately suspended him.'
Bright was arrested in July after police were alerted by Kik. Images downloaded from April 2 to July 18. Suspended from Sports Xtra and lost his role at the school. Plea of guilty entered almost five weeks before public disclosure.
