Offence Summary

Brian Wylie was jailed for 12 years after admitting to historic indecent assaults and gross indecency on a child under 14, and being found guilty of two counts of sexual assault on children under 13.

Full Description

A 64-year-old man from Bradford has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for a series of sexual offences against young children, including historic abuses and more recent assaults that caused lasting trauma to his victims.

Brian Wylie, of Clayton Road, Clayton, appeared via video link at Bradford Crown Court on 4th August 2023 for sentencing on five charges. He admitted three historic offences of indecent assault and gross indecency with a child under the age of 14. Additionally, following a trial, he was found guilty in March 2023 of two counts of sexual assault of a child under the age of 13. Prosecutor David McGonigal detailed how one victim was so young that they did not understand the wrongdoing in Wylie's actions.

The court heard that Wylie's offences affected three victims, leading to long-term emotional disorientation, self-harm, and struggles with eating disorders. Judge Colin Burn emphasised the severity, stating: "The effect of your offending has been long lasting. They have caused significant emotional disorientation to children and therefore also trauma which is likely to be long-lasting." Regarding the first victim, the judge noted: "In cases of this type it is relatively unusual for an offender of your type to come forward in this way and to make those admissions."

Defence barrister Allan Armbrister referenced issues raised by Wylie in his pre-sentence report, including potential post-traumatic stress disorder or psychological damage. However, Judge Burn dismissed this as mitigation, saying it could be "no excuse for sexual offending of this sort" and offered "little or no mitigation for ruining the lives of others". In addition to the 12-year custodial sentence, Wylie received a three-year extended licence period, a sexual harm prevention order until further notice, and must register as a sex offender indefinitely.

The case was investigated by West Yorkshire Police, who highlighted their commitment to treating reports of historic sexual abuse seriously. According to police policy, such matters are thoroughly investigated, with cases potentially forwarded to the Crown Prosecution Service if sufficient evidence exists, considering legality, public interest, and conviction prospects. The sentencing reflects the court's recognition of the profound impact on the young victims.
