Full Description

In a harrowing case that came to light over a decade after the initial crimes, Jason Dockrill, a 46-year-old unemployed fitter with a diagnosed personality disorder, was sentenced at the Old Bailey for a brutal sexual attack on a woman in east London. The incident occurred in November 2001, two years prior to Dockrill's infamous rape and murder of 23-year-old Finnish student Suvi Aronen near Wanstead Common in March 2003, for which he is already serving a life sentence with parole eligibility in 2028.

Prosecutor Anita Arora detailed the 'terrifying' assault during the court proceedings. The victim, a woman in her 30s, was grabbed by Dockrill outside a club near Tower Bridge. He then led her to a secluded area near bins, where he subjected her to rape and two counts of indecent assault. Throughout the attack, Dockrill repeatedly told his victim, 'I know you want it,' and threatened that he 'could do some serious damage' if she screamed. When she managed to break free, he issued chilling warnings, stating he would 'come and find where you live' and 'kill you and your husband.' The court heard that this ordeal had a very severe and long-term impact on the victim, as noted by Judge Rebecca Poulet in her sentencing remarks.

Dockrill's admission to the charges came in May 2016, prompted by a DNA match from evidence collected at the time of the 2001 attack. This breakthrough linked him to the earlier crime after his conviction for the 2003 murder. On 20 March 2003, the same day as Aronen's killing, Dockrill had randomly assaulted three women in the Wanstead Common area, including an 80-year-old victim. Aronen was grabbed in an underpass while on the phone to her mother; the line remained open as Dockrill carried out what Judge Poulet described as an 'appalling and depraved' attack on the student.

Judge Poulet emphasised the gravity of the 2001 case, directing that her remarks and the details of the assault be presented to the parole board for any future release applications. Dockrill received nine years for the rape and five years for each indecent assault, with all sentences to run concurrently with his life term. The case underscores the lasting pursuit of justice through forensic evidence, as reported by the BBC on 23 May 2016, drawing from court records at HM Courts & Tribunals Service.
