Offence Summary

Basharat Wali admitted two counts of indecent assault on a teenage girl and received a 12-month prison sentence.

Full Description

Basharat Wali, 46 and from Dewsbury, was sent to prison for 12 months on 4 June 2026 after he pleaded guilty to two counts of indecent assault against a girl in her teens. The abuse occurred between 1994 and 1997, with Wali being one of four men who took advantage of the victim's youth and vulnerability.

Leeds Crown Court heard that Wali admitted his offending at an earlier hearing. The victim's powerful statement revealed the lasting pain caused by the abuse: "They took pieces of me that I will never get back" and "the fear and memories flood back like a tidal wave." Wali's guilty plea was taken into account during sentencing, but the judge still imposed a custodial term, acknowledging the harm that had been done to the now-adult victim.

The sentencing of all four men brought an end to a long-running investigation by West Yorkshire Police into historical sexual offences committed in the Dewsbury area.
