Offence Summary

Darren O'Connor, a former special constable with Warwickshire Police, was jailed for possessing and distributing over 1,000 indecent images of children. He pleaded guilty to multiple counts of making and distributing such images, receiving an eight-month custodial sentence.

Full Description

A former police officer has been sentenced to eight months in prison for possessing and distributing more than 1,000 indecent images of children. Darren O'Connor, who served as a special constable with Warwickshire Police, engaged in this illegal activity for over a year starting from August 2021. The case came to light following his arrest at his home in Coventry in January 2023, where detectives discovered the images stored on two mobile phones.

O'Connor appeared at Warwick Crown Court, where he pleaded guilty to three counts of making an indecent photograph of a child and two counts of distributing an indecent photograph of a child. The court was informed that among the 1,072 images seized, 372 were classified as category A, the most serious type involving the most graphic abuse. Following his arrest, O'Connor resigned from his position at Nuneaton Police Station. A subsequent gross misconduct hearing determined that he would have been dismissed had he not resigned.

In addition to the eight-month jail term, O'Connor was placed on the sex offenders' register for 10 years and subjected to a 10-year sexual harm prevention order. Detective Superintendent Paul Thompson of Warwickshire Police commented on the case, stating: "As a serving special constable, O’Connor would have understood what he was doing was wrong." He further described O'Connor's actions as "deliberate, unforced and unlawful, and morally reprehensible", adding: "We welcome this conviction and hope the public can take confidence from this investigation and the commitment of police to bring these types of offenders to justice."

The investigation was conducted by Warwickshire Police, highlighting their dedication to tackling child sexual exploitation. This case underscores the betrayal of public trust by an individual in a position of authority, with the sentencing serving as a deterrent to similar offences.
