Full Description

A Gloucestershire man has been sentenced to four-and-a-half years in prison for sexually abusing a vulnerable woman under his professional care. Simon Gibbs, aged 41, from Swangrove Gardens in Tuffley, pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual activity with the woman, who suffers from a mental disorder, at Gloucester Crown Court.

The case came to light following a report that Gibbs, employed as a care worker, had engaged in inappropriate sexual activity with the victim. Authorities arrested him promptly, highlighting the severity of abusing a position of trust. The offences underscore the vulnerabilities faced by individuals with mental health conditions who rely on carers for support.

During the sentencing hearing, Judge [name not specified] imposed the custodial sentence, recognising the breach of trust and the harm inflicted on the victim. In addition to the prison term, Gibbs was made subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order, required to register as a sex offender, and permanently barred from working in the care sector. These measures aim to prevent future offences and protect vulnerable members of society.

Detective Constable Victoria Bygrave, from the Rape and Serious Sexual Offences Team at Gloucestershire Police, led the investigation. She commented: 'Gibbs was a man who abused his position in order to engage in sexual activity with a vulnerable woman. This has been a difficult case for all involved, but this sentence shows that we will do everything in our power to protect those who cannot protect themselves and ensure that they see justice done.' Bygrave further emphasised the importance of reporting such crimes, assuring the public that allegations are treated with utmost seriousness.

The case was reported in the Gazette Series on a date corresponding to the sentencing, drawing attention to the ongoing efforts by law enforcement to safeguard vulnerable adults. Gibbs's actions not only violated legal boundaries but also eroded public confidence in care services, prompting calls for enhanced oversight in the sector.
