Offence Summary

Edward Alexander Lee downloaded thousands of images of children being sexually abused over nine years and pleaded guilty to 15 charges related to child pornography. He was sentenced to three years on probation at Belfast Crown Court.

Full Description

Edward Alexander Lee, a 34-year-old man originally from Whitehall Square in Belfast but now residing in England, has been sentenced for possessing and downloading a large collection of child pornography images. The case came to light following a police search of his then-home in Belfast on 5 June 2014, during which officers seized computer equipment containing multiple folders of illicit material that Lee admitted to creating himself.

Lee pleaded guilty to a total of 15 charges related to child pornography at Belfast Crown Court. Prosecutor Simon Jenkins informed the court that the vast majority of the thousands of images were categorised as the lowest severity level, though some fell into higher, more serious categories depicting children being sexually abused. During police interviews, Lee confessed to downloading the images for his 'own strange pleasure' over the preceding nine years, spanning approximately from 2005 onwards. He was entirely frank and co-operative with authorities from the outset, pleading guilty at arraignment.

Defence lawyer Taylor Campbell highlighted Lee's immediate admission of guilt and full cooperation with the police. Lee's wife described him as a 'loving and normal young man' in a statement to the court. However, Judge Gordon Kerr QC emphasised the gravity of the offences, stating that while Lee viewed the images for personal gratification, they represented 'serious matters' because 'children were abused for these images to be made'. The judge further noted that 'children would continue to be abused while people like Lee continued to view such material' and that 'society would not tolerate such behaviour'.

Opting against a custodial sentence, Judge Kerr determined that a term of up to one year in prison would provide little benefit to Lee or the community. Instead, on Wednesday in 2016, Lee was placed on three years' probation and ordered to complete a specialised course on sexual offending to address his behaviour and prevent further viewing of such material. This approach was deemed the most effective for protecting society and aiding Lee's rehabilitation. The case was heard at Belfast Crown Court, with reporting by BBC News.
