Offence Summary

Bahmani Ahmadi groomed numerous children online over several years for sexual abuse and was caught by police using a false identity. His original sentence of 4 years and 6 months' imprisonment was increased to 6 years and 6 months by the Court of Appeal.

Full Description

Bahmani Ahmadi, a paedophile from Newcastle, engaged in the grooming of numerous children over a number of years with the intent to sexually abuse them. He operated under an assumed online identity to target vulnerable minors, showing complete disregard for their welfare in pursuit of his own sexual gratification.

Ahmadi's criminal activities were uncovered by police officers who identified his deceptive online persona. He was arrested and subsequently tried at Newcastle Crown Court. In September 2015, he was initially sentenced to 4 years and 6 months' imprisonment for his offences, which involved child grooming and sexual abuse.

The Solicitor General, Robert Buckland QC MP, deemed the original sentence unduly lenient given the scale and duration of Ahmadi's predatory behaviour. Under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme, the case was referred to the Court of Appeal. On 9 December 2015, the Court of Appeal increased Ahmadi's custodial sentence to 6 years and 6 months' imprisonment.

Following the appeal hearing, Robert Buckland stated: "I referred this unduly lenient sentence to the Court of Appeal as Ahmadi groomed a large number of victims over a lengthy period of time with no regard to their vulnerability, simply his own sexual gratification. I’m pleased that the Court of Appeal has increased his sentence to six and a half years’ imprisonment and hope this sends a clear message to anyone caught grooming and abusing children – you will face a significant time in jail." This case was published by the Attorney General's Office under the 2015 to 2016 Cameron Conservative government, highlighting the UK's commitment to tougher penalties for child sex offences.
