Offence Summary

Steven Wilkinson was jailed for four years after amassing and distributing nearly 350 indecent images of children over more than a decade, and attempting to engage in sexual communication with individuals he believed to be 14-year-old boys.

Full Description

Steven Wilkinson, a 44-year-old man from Bradford, West Yorkshire, was sentenced to four years in prison at Bradford Crown Court on 14th April 2024 for a series of serious sexual offences involving indecent images of children and attempts to groom minors online.

The case came to light following Wilkinson's involvement in online chats with two undercover police officers from West Yorkshire Police, who were posing as 14-year-old boys. During these conversations, Wilkinson made explicit comments, describing one 'boy' as 'sexy as hell' after receiving a photograph of the youngster in a school uniform. This predatory behaviour revealed his sexual interest in children, leading to a search of his home on Elmfield Drive in Bradford in March 2023.

Upon searching the property, officers seized various electronic devices and uncovered almost 350 indecent images that Wilkinson had downloaded between 2013 and March 2023. The material included horrific content depicting the sexual abuse of babies as well as older children. Prosecutor David Hewitt informed the court that there was evidence Wilkinson had discussed child abuse in online forums and distributed material to at least 14 other users or groups, including more than 300 attachments containing various levels of abuse to one user alone.

Wilkinson, who had no previous convictions but received a caution in 2013 for outraging public decency, admitted to two offences of attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child, three offences of distributing indecent images of children, and three offences of possessing indecent images of children. His barrister, Lauren Smith, argued that Wilkinson recognised the danger he posed and was eager to receive help from the probation service.

However, Judge Ahmed Nadim described Wilkinson as 'an active predator seeking to groom, manipulate and ultimately commit sexual offences involving real children.' The judge emphasised the gravity of the offences, stating: 'The production, possession and distribution of indecent images of children are not victimless crimes. They are a digital record of the rape and sexual abuse of real children. Every image you possessed and every image that you distributed is a permanent record of an act of degradation, pain and humiliation inflicted upon a vulnerable child. The psychological damage to those victims is profound and lifelong.'

Judge Nadim noted that the offending was aggravated by its duration of over a decade, its systematic nature, and Wilkinson's attempts to live out his fantasies by communicating with what he believed to be minors. In addition to the four-year custodial sentence—reduced from a possible six years due to early guilty pleas—Wilkinson was ordered to register as a sex offender for life and comply with a sexual harm prevention order for 20 years.
