Full Description

On 20 February 2023, Kevin Lloyd Williams, aged 45 and from Hackney, appeared at Wood Green Crown Court in London, where a jury found him guilty of two counts of rape. The offences occurred in the early hours of 1 May 2022, when the victim, a woman in her 40s, encountered Williams inside a supermarket on Upper Clapton Road. The two had known each other for some years, and after purchasing drinks, they left the store intending to consume them together.

However, Williams expressed romantic and sexual interest in the woman, which she firmly rejected, stating that she already had a partner. Despite her refusal, Williams followed her to an alleyway near Rossington Street, E5, where he blocked her exit, trapping her. He smoked a drug pipe while keeping her confined, then struck her across the face before forcing her to have sex. Following the assault, Williams demanded money from her. Desperate to escape, the woman suggested withdrawing cash from an ATM at a nearby shop. Once inside the shop, she sought help from staff, who were initially reluctant to involve the police. She eventually made it home and contacted the authorities herself.

Detective Sergeant Else Dierick, of the Metropolitan Police's Central East Command, described Williams as a 'predatory offender' in a statement following the conviction. She highlighted the victim's courage in reporting the incident and pursuing the case to trial, noting that the woman had simply gone to buy groceries and a casual conversation should not have led to such terror. Dierick also thanked two members of the public who overheard the crime and provided crucial evidence in court. The Metropolitan Police emphasised their commitment to apprehending individuals who pose a danger to women and girls, underscoring that Williams's actions exemplified the predatory behaviour they actively combat.

Williams was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment on the same day as his conviction. The case was prosecuted under the jurisdiction of the Metropolitan Police Service, responsible for policing the Hackney area within Greater London. Court records from Wood Green Crown Court confirm the details of the trial and sentencing.
