Full Description

Marcus Benson, a 53-year-old man from Aldershot, has been sentenced to 28 years' imprisonment following his conviction on all counts of serious sexual offences committed against three young girls over a period spanning more than a decade.

The case came to light through investigations by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary as part of Operation Amberstone North. Benson, residing at Raglan Close in Aldershot, stood trial at Winchester Crown Court. The three-and-a-half-week trial, which concluded in November 2021, resulted in Benson being found guilty on seven charges: four counts of indecent assault against two girls and three counts of rape against two girls. Notably, two of the indecent assault charges and one of the rape charges were multiple-incident offences, highlighting the repeated nature of the abuse.

The offences took place between 1993 and 2004, targeting three girls who were vulnerable at the time. Benson had denied all charges during the proceedings, but the jury convicted him unanimously on every count after hearing detailed evidence from the prosecution.

Sentencing occurred on 14 January 2022 at Winchester Crown Court. The judge imposed a 28-year custodial sentence, reflecting the severity and duration of the crimes. Detective Constable Michelle Carrig, leading the investigation for Operation Amberstone North, commented on the impact of the case: 'I cannot underestimate the trauma that all three victims have suffered because of what Benson did to them. I hope today’s sentence has provided the victims with some element of closure, knowing that Benson has been jailed for a very long time for the harrowing crimes he committed against them.' She also praised the victims for their courage in reporting the offences.

This conviction underscores the police force's commitment to tackling historical sexual abuse cases, with the offences investigated and prosecuted by Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary. The case serves as a stark reminder of the long-term effects of such crimes on survivors.
