Offence Summary

Patrick Joyce was jailed for four years after attempting to meet a 14-year-old boy for sexual purposes, having sent explicit messages online and arrived at the location with items intended for abuse.

Full Description

Patrick Joyce, a 62-year-old man from Luton, Hertfordshire, was sentenced to four years in prison for a series of child sex offences following a sting operation by Hertfordshire Constabulary.

The offences began in late October 2025 when Joyce initiated contact via an online website and WhatsApp, sending sexual messages to an account he believed belonged to a 14-year-old boy. Unbeknownst to him, the account was operated by undercover officers from the Hertfordshire Constabulary’s Child Online Safeguarding Team as part of efforts to protect children from online predators.

On 13 November 2025, Joyce travelled to Verulamium Park in St Albans to meet the boy. Upon arrival, he was arrested by waiting officers. A search of his possessions revealed a rucksack containing a red thong and lubricant, items clearly intended for sexual exploitation. Additionally, a small knife in a sheath was discovered in his car, leading to a separate charge.

Joyce, residing at Hart Hill Lane in Luton, was charged with engaging in sexual communication with a child, arranging or facilitating the commission of a child sexual offence, causing a child to watch a sexual act, and possession of a bladed article in a public place. He pleaded guilty to all charges at St Albans Crown Court.

On 12 March 2026, Joyce was sentenced to a total of four years' imprisonment. In addition to the custodial sentence, he was handed a Sexual Harm Prevention Order to restrict his future behaviour and protect the public. Detective Constable Tom Campbell from the Child Online Safeguarding Team commented on the case, stating: “While there was no physical victim at the heart of this specific crime, it showed the steps Patrick Joyce would take to meet a child and sexually abuse them. Offenders like Joyce undermine trust in online spaces and can fuel wider criminal activity. He is a dangerous individual who is now rightly serving a custodial sentence.”

The case highlights the proactive measures taken by Hertfordshire Constabulary to safeguard children from online grooming and sexual exploitation, demonstrating the effectiveness of decoy operations in apprehending potential offenders before harm can occur.
